If the Bowler bowls the ball such that it passes the batsman, when standing in normal position at the crease on the outside of a clearly marked line 30” outside the off stump, the Umpire shall call and signal, “Wide Ball” as soon as the ball is dead.
If the ball shall pass on the leg side of the wicket and behind the batsman, the Umpire shall call and signal, “Wide Ball” as soon as the ball is dead. A ball passing between the batsman and the leg stump, shall not be deemed a wide ball
TIPS for umpires
1. Be consistent
2. Use the point where the wide line intersects the batting crease to judge whether a ball is wide. If it is outside of the line at this point – the ball should be called a wide
3. Be careful of swinging or spinning deliveries. It is NOT where the ball ends up – rather where it is at the time it passes the batting crease.
